So yesterday when I went to boot up my new laptop, it refused to cooperate. Even in safe mode. Even in last successful mode. In any frigging mode. The diagnostic test I tried to run on the hard drive reported total hard drive failure. :/ Did I mention this computer is less than seven months old?

I took it back to where I bought it (and where I bought a two-year extended warranty) only to discover that it was too new and has to be sent back to the manufacturer. At least I don't have to do it -- they'll do it -- but it will take two weeks, if not longer, before I get it back. :/ :/

The good news is that all my writing's backed up, so I didn't lose any stories. The bad news is that I haven't backed up my most recent iTunes purchases, so those things might be gone. Ditto the custom layout I had for my one computer game vice - Mahjongg. :( I can redo the Mahjongg tiles (it will just take time). If I have to repurchase the iTunes stuff, it will still cost less than the $99 they wanted to charge me for data recovery. Anybody iTunes savvy on my flist know if I can reverse the process -- upload from my iPod to the computer to recreate what I used to have on iTunes? I'm guessing that I'll end up with a new hard drive and will have to reinstall everything when I get my computer back. I'd really rather not have to re-rip all the music I used to have in iTunes if I don't have to.

You can copy+paste or drag'n'drop the files from your iPod to your computer when you view the files as if the iPod is an external drive.

The filenames are mangled, but right click + Properties gives you the track title/artist and you can rename them.

I'm not sure if the iTunes licenses will be carried across, however technically since the files can be played on your iPod the licenses should be there somewhere.

I hope that you get your computer back in decently usable condition and that everything works from then on. Good luck for the time you're without it.

I used this programme http://www.ipodsoft.com/site/pmwiki.php?n=igadget.Homepage to transfer stuff from my ipod to the new computer and it was worth every penny to buy it.

When I used it, it was called Podplus, but it looks to have the same specifications.

When I had to take my laptop in before Christmas they told me the same thing, that it would take 2+ weeks to get it back. However, when I checked the status online after a week, it was back in the store and no one had bothered to call me. :-\ So keep checking the status... yours might come back early as well.

I'm sorry you're having computer problems. *hugs* I hope they send it back to you soon. It's a good thing you didn't lose your writing. Like the others said you can copy stuff from your itunes to the computer. *hugs*

and if you can't, well, your friends might have 'copies' lying around they can send you. It's like taping off vinyl for someone who only has cassette. Thank god you backed up your writing. reminds me that I need a new flashdrive- my other ones are fullllllll...

Yeah, I'm an idiot when it comes to the Ipod. *snort* I had to have my 14 yr old niece show me how to move things around.

Good luck

Sorry to hear about the laptop! It always sucks to lose anything you've taken the time to load and save on a computer. You know, I had two IPOD files just simply disappear this past week! Songs I downloaded awhile ago and hadn't gotten around to copying anywhere else--no idea what that's about!

Good news on the writing back up. Makes me think I should do a back up myself--haven't done one in awhile! You just never know with computers.

Sending more chocolate! ; ) *hugs you*

Ephpod is a free program that works wonders, though it's a bit tricky to figure out sometimes. You have to select all the songs and then right click and hit "copy to directory" or something along those lines. It's pretty easy once you figure it out and it works nicely. Though it puts the songs in separate folders for each artist, so if you just want it all in the same folder then you'll have to move all the songs again. I hope that helps a bit :)

Anyway, sorry to hear about your laptop, and I hope everything works out for you!

Oh no! :( *hugs* I'm glad you had your writing backed up. I'm still learning about iTunes & iPods, so I hope someone else on your Flist has good news about restoring your recent iTunes purchases. Hang in there, sweetie!

I love Mahjongg, it's so addictive. :-)

I don't know how to get stuff back from your ipod I'm afraid. When my pc crashed, I had to reload everything.

I have it when you lose all your music files!

I used a program called "IpodRip" to recover my iPod songs into my iTunes. I believe it's a free program for the first 10 times you use it, then it costs $$ to buy (my dad liked it so much he just bought it... and I'm pretty sure I've downloaded the program a few times without problem).

Hopefully this program, if it interests you, is Windows compatible (I've got a Mac). I don't have any shortcuts re: how the program works, I have to fiddle around with it everytime.

Hope that helps!

Several years ago my computer did the same thing and there were many many trips back and forth to try and get it repaired. Gateway would never accept that the system was clearly a lemon in disguise and I never bought one of their computers again. Very glad to hear you'd backed up your work. I just got an external hard drive to back up my computer so I'll be doing that tonight. Too many people on my friends list have had computer crashes lately.
