well, that was fun

I now know what it's like to be in the path of a severe thunderstorm. :/ Was very lucky, nothing really close was hit by lightning. The closest strike I saw was less than a quarter mile away near some view houses at the top of the hill. There could have been a closer strike behind the house that I didn't see; the enormous crash of thunder was almost simultaneous with the lightning flash, and the thunder was strong enough to shake the house.
At the height of the storm I quit counting lightning strikes because they were happening every three or four seconds. I'm not kidding. I stood outside on my front porch by the hose just in case lightning set the dry grass in the field next door on fire, but thankfully that didn't happen. Lightning did start lots of fires, but the storm also dumped lots of rain that put out most of the fires. Also caused a flash flood in a neighborhood a couple of miles from where I live.
Kinda freaky.
Then there's the funny part.
Hubby's off gaming tonight. He called about nine forty-five to find out if we had power at home. (We did.) The power had been knocked out at the game shop at hour earlier and hadn't come back on, but the die-hard gamers were still playing by the light of their cells phones. :P

Date: 2006-07-22 04:18 pm (UTC)When we were in Berlin we had rainfalls like no one there remembers. We were in the city centre and it was so strong and kept on for so long that Nicki and I decided to get the car while her mum was waiting for us at the shop. We got utterly wet despite an umbrella and had to wade through water that was knee-deep. Same with Nicki's mum later. Also the car hardly made it. I guess the pipes under that part of Berlin are very old. We saw lots of people dressed in suits, walking barefoot, carrying their shoes, and lots of young people just splashing. It wasn't fun for those people caught in the underground or whose cars went under, but for all the rest of us it rather was!
And now I'll stop telling rain stories.
