'Pirates' plunders B.O.
Mouse movie squashes 'Spider-Man'
By Ben Fritz
In the end, it wasn't even close.
Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" sunk box office records with an astounding $132 million, a full $17 million ahead of the previous No. 1 weekend title held by "Spider-Man."
Pic set records every day. On Friday, its $55.5 million gross was the biggest single day in b.o. history. By Saturday, its $100.2 million take was the biggest ever two day gross and made it the first film to break the $100 million barrier in 48 hours.
Despite setting sail at an ultra-wide 4,133 theaters, "Pirates" plundered an amazing $31,945 per play, the biggest ever for a film in wide release.
Saturday gross was down a bit from Friday, a fact the studio attributed to the $9 million the film took from midnight shows on its opening day.
"Pirates" played about evenly to all audience segments, as matinees were packed with families and late night shows with adults. Unsurprisingly, there were frequent reports of sell-outs and multiplexes adding screens as lines mounted.
Rather than crushing the competition, "Pirates" seemed to benefit the market, as most films had relatively modest drops.
Only exception was last weekend's blockbuster bow, "Superman Returns," which fell a sizable 58% on its second frame to $21.9 million. After 10 days, cume is a healthy, though not spectacular, $141.7 million. Warner Bros. is undoubtedly hoping that post-"Pirates" declines will be more modest.
Last weekend's other wide release, "The Devil Wears Prada," declined a more modest 43%, coming in no. 3 with $15.6 million. Fox's female-targeted counter-programmer has already taken a surprisingly strong $63.7 million.
"Pirates" wasn't the only good news for Disney. "Cars" continues to hold well, dropping only 29% and bringing its cume to $205.5 million, making it the fifth Pixar toon to break $200 million domestic. If strong legs keep up, "Cars" could end up close to other Pixar hits such as "Toy Story 2" and "Monsters, Inc." despite a weaker opening.
Sony's "Click" fell 40% to $12 million and became the seventh Adam Sandler film to pass $100 million.
In limited release, Warner Independent Pictures opened "A Scanner Darkly" to a very healthy $406,000 at 17 theaters, averaging $23,882 per play. Richard Linklater-helmed sci-fi adaptation expands to around 190 locations next weekend.
ThinkFilm expanded "Strangers with Candy" from two to 21 playdates and took a solid $235,775, or $11,227 per play. Comedy Central series adaptation will expand to over 100 theaters next weekend.
Miramax bowed soccer docu "Once in a Lifetime" to a decent $12,225 at one theater in New York.
ETA: Some spoilers lurk in the comments, so beware, me maties. ;)
And GIP!! Made for me by the wonderful

Date: 2006-07-10 05:06 am (UTC)*grins* I did too. Took two MORE people than I did on Thursday at midnght. We had a decent turnout for a 10am Sunday morning show, and the 11:15 must have been pretty full too, as the parking lot was packed when we came out and PotC2 was the only other thing showing that early.
I'm going again at least twice more this week, if I can work it out. How about you? ;~P

Date: 2006-07-10 06:00 am (UTC)I don't know about you, but I got a lot more out of it this time, as far as figuring out the various plots/motivations of the characters. I've read people complaing that the movie is so busy but it's really much ado about nothing, but that's not the case at all, IMHO. All the characters have pretty clear cut motivations. Even Will, at the end, when he says Elizabeth's name in Tia's hut, only Tia interrupts him before he can say more. *wibbly sigh*

Date: 2006-07-10 06:08 am (UTC)I agree with you about Davy and Tia too....
I still feel like I missed stuff, so I'm game to go again as soon as I can get there. Damn that the theater's an hour one way from here. I'm gonna make PP watch it in a different town/state every night during our road trip! ;~P

Date: 2006-07-10 07:35 am (UTC)This is, of course, true.
Wednesday should be fun since I'm going with a friend who knows nothing about slash, but has been tin-hatter for years! And she does like drooling over Orlando... but then who doesn't?
