Oh my, what an awesome movie! :D And the theater was packed too at 4:25 in the afternoon. We actually tried to get into the 3:20 show, but by the time we got there, the guy selling tickets said he recommended going to the next show. I'm guessing the only seats left for the earlier show were in the first row, and that's not how I wanted to watch the movie.

If you haven't seen it yet, without spoiling anything, I'll just say stay until the end of the credits. That should be no surprise since there was that little monkey scene at the end of the first one. So yeah, stay, because if this one's anything to go by, you never know when the little things are going to mean something later.

Okay, I'm going to cut the next bit for spoilers, so click on the cut at your own peril, me maties, yo-ho! ;)

It's probably just me, but I'm thinking Ted Elliott and Terry Russio (the writers) are fans of the first three Star Wars movies. There are lots of similarities between the two trilogies, and I think the similarities go beyond just the fact that both Star Wars and Pirates are a type of quest fantasy.

I could draw some specific parallels in character types/situations/problems, there's even a huge honking parallel between the end of POTC2 and Empire Strikes Back, but I've already contaminated my brain (and Loyal's) and that's enough. I'm not going to contaminate yours. Except, of course, if you're already thinking about it just because I mentioned it. ;) Welcome to my brain - it's an odd and scary place. Heh.

Anyhoo...

Back to Pirates. Awesome movie. It's long, but it didn't feel long to me. Lots and lots of in-jokes and quick references to the first movie. Bigger action sequences, both in physical scope and level of difficulty. A new bad guy to despise. Good character development in the major characters. Norrington's all scruffy! My, how Will Turner has matured! Long gone is the gangly boy of Pirates 1 who knew how to wield a sword but knew little of life. Elizabeth learns something new about herself by the end of the movie. And Jack... well, Jack is just Jack, but he's more in this movie.

This movie does what all middle movies in a trilogy should do -- it builds on the first movie, tells a complete story within the framework of this movie, yet sets up the next movie perfectly. Some people might not be satisfied with the end of POTC2 because it's not a clean end, but neither was The Two Towers and a lot of people say Two Towers is their favorite of the trilogy.

According to the Daily Variety headline blurbs I get, industry estimates say POTC2 could break box office records this weekend. If true, it deserves it. All IMHO of course. ;)

So yeah... I guess you could say I liked it. *g*

I loved it too! I saw a midnight showing of it Thursday. I loved the final scene - I didn't see it coming!

Can't wait for the third!!

Saw it with good friends on the evening of July 6. I like it very much, especially the naked back of Will. *LOL*

Can't wait to see the last one in next summer.

I'm still hoping there's a fourth LOTR book out there no one has ever found yet and it needs to be filmed.

i don't get all the disappointment i'm seeing on my flist about POTC2. *shrugs* i mean, it wasn't perfect. there were things i could have done without, etc.

but i wasn't going to the movie expecting to see this great cinematic masterpiece. i was going to be entertained and to see the same characters i loved from the first. and it worked for me! :D

totally Empire Strikes Back at the end and i'm so glad that two other people have noticed besides me. i thought i was all fandom collision-y by myself. :P

Oh good... it wasn't just us! I was drawing all sorts of parallels (including where Will Turner ended up hiding when he needed to escape the Flying Dutchman). *g*

Dammit. We left before the end of the credits.

Oh well. *snap* Guess that means I'll have to go see it again...

You know what else I thought? That whole swordplay bit at the old mill? That tasted of princess bride to me. I kept expecting for someone to yell out "Aaaaaaaaasssssssssss yoooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuu wishhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...."

Yeah. Good. Most hilariousest awesomestest stunty pirate fights evah.

*g*

And yeah, I'll be going to see it again soon too. :D

It's just a little thing at the end, but you never know. ;) The monkey did play a part in this one, after all. *g*

I ordered our tickets online Thursday night, thankgod, it was packed for a 7pm showing. And when WE got out, the 10pm showing audience was being told to wait in the courtyard...THAT was packed already!

Some people might not be satisfied with the end of POTC2 because it's not a clean end, but neither was The Two Towers and a lot of people say Two Towers is their favorite of the trilogy.

Yup. My friend had NO clue there was a #3 POTC and I was hysterically laughing as she cursed out Disney & Johnny & Orlando and even the monkey. lol "But but it's only just started! NO...i'ts NOT been two hours!!!" Yea, the time flew for us too.

Fandoms collide? My friend kept telling me about Will's stunt "that is SO a Legolas move" or when during some fight scene there was a jump she said "THAT is FOTR". lol

I see the Star Wars connection too;VERY cool of them, intentional or not.

We both decided we need to see it again...and soon!!

We saw it in the largest "small" theater in our complex. It's on the two big screens and this one, which meant the earlier show in the big theater was packed -- in the middle of a Friday afternoon. Amazing. I bet the night shows last night were insane. And yeah, there was a line for the next showing already waiting when we left.

Oh man... I would have been pissed at the ending if I didn't know there was another movie!

Ah, so it's not just me with the Star Wars thing. Yay! :D

I'm probably going to see it again tomorrow night. We've been invited to go with friends, and since hubby didn't get to see it yesterday, we'll probably go. Not that I'm complaining or anything because I'd be going again tomorrow anyway. ;)

LOL She was!! I had to explain to her in LOTR terms "it's a triology that really wasn't until they found out how much money it could make!"

I saw it again tonight with the parents;Mom has a crush on Orlando and Dad usually doesn't like Johnny. BOTH came away liking the movie a lot....

Yay!

Yay!!! :D Glad to hear something positive about the movie! Our newspaper ran a scathing review that made me snarl, but that's nothing new. I think their movie reviewer is chronically constipated. ;) Hope to see the movie this weekend in between attempting to catching up on everything.

I can't believe any reviews could be scathing, but I guess this movie isn't for everyone. Even Gene theguywiththebigbushymustache gave it an absolutely glowing review on The Today Show (his review of Superman was lukewarm). *g* I know you're going to enjoy it. I hope you get to see it in between catching up on things. *hugs and smooches* :D

Everything you said was so true and just what I thought of the film. My daughter noticed the similarity to the other film you mentioned (won't say it unless anyone else reads this and will be spoiled by it). I really loved this film and can't wait to see it an obsessively amount of times before it leaves the theaters. There's just something about a film like this that, no matter how big your tv screen, is best seen on a BIG screen!

*hugs*

Oh, absolutely! This is one of those movies that's going to draw me back to the theater quite a few times. That hasn't happened since The Two Towers. :D

I'll have to do that. :) I'm sure Star Wars borrowed from films of the past as well. Thanks for the rec!

EXACLTY what my mom said. "hey, errol did that" like she KNOWS the man. *snort* And called him the "the cutest swashbuckler ever" me & my slashy mind got a kick out of THAT!

LOL well I sure didn't watch Captain Blood when it came out, but my mom was a huge fan and I think I inherited it.

and yeah slashy omigod.

The knife in the sail stunt was beautifully Errol homage.

Oh man... !! You *have* to watch the end little scene. That's the whole monkey joke in the first part of POTC2 (and I have a sneaking suspicion that's why we got the character we did at the end, because of what Tia could do with the monkey *g*).

now I HAVE to go and see 2 AGAIN, just so I can stay past the credits.

It's a good excuse to go again though, isn't it? ;)

:)

I saw it yesterday with [livejournal.com profile] soar38 and [livejournal.com profile] nienas_dreams, in a packed cinema and it was a really marvelous experience. (We'd reserved the best seats in the house weeks beforehand and receiven nasty looks because we didn't have to queue and then we jumped in and sat down right dead center, royal circle.)

There's very rarely been a movie where I come out and want to go right back in and re-watch (LotR was the most recent, I think), but that fell into the category. :) Sure there were a few plot holes, but you were having so much rollicking fun that you just left those behind.

I was also surprised how little people stayed for the end of the credits. I thought there might have been more. But they'll learn.

*hugs*

It must be marvelous to book tickets in a theater with reserved seats. Here it's open seating, so yeah, lines do form quickly for wildly popular movies like this one.

Sure there were a few plot holes, but you were having so much rollicking fun that you just left those behind.

Exactly! I'm sure I could pick the plot apart if I wanted to, but I was just having so much fun with the movie that I don't.

And yeah, not a whole lot of people stayed until the end of the credits in our theater either. :/ I usually stay to credits end anyway, mostly because I want to see the copyright information at the end. (yes, I'm a geek) I'm usually the last one to leave the theater, so it's kinda cool when other people stay behind along with me. :)

*hugs*

I'm glad you've having such a marvelous time on your trip!

My sentiments exactly! It worked so well . . .

Have to agree with your comments about the "growth" of the characters this time round . . . made it all so much more enjoyable!!

Can you tell, I loved it too!!!!!!!!!!
