Oh my, what an awesome movie! :D And the theater was packed too at 4:25 in the afternoon. We actually tried to get into the 3:20 show, but by the time we got there, the guy selling tickets said he recommended going to the next show. I'm guessing the only seats left for the earlier show were in the first row, and that's not how I wanted to watch the movie.
If you haven't seen it yet, without spoiling anything, I'll just say stay until the end of the credits. That should be no surprise since there was that little monkey scene at the end of the first one. So yeah, stay, because if this one's anything to go by, you never know when the little things are going to mean something later.
Okay, I'm going to cut the next bit for spoilers, so click on the cut at your own peril, me maties, yo-ho! ;)
It's probably just me, but I'm thinking Ted Elliott and Terry Russio (the writers) are fans of the first three Star Wars movies. There are lots of similarities between the two trilogies, and I think the similarities go beyond just the fact that both Star Wars and Pirates are a type of quest fantasy.
I could draw some specific parallels in character types/situations/problems, there's even a huge honking parallel between the end of POTC2 and Empire Strikes Back, but I've already contaminated my brain (and Loyal's) and that's enough. I'm not going to contaminate yours. Except, of course, if you're already thinking about it just because I mentioned it. ;) Welcome to my brain - it's an odd and scary place. Heh.
Anyhoo...
Back to Pirates. Awesome movie. It's long, but it didn't feel long to me. Lots and lots of in-jokes and quick references to the first movie. Bigger action sequences, both in physical scope and level of difficulty. A new bad guy to despise. Good character development in the major characters. Norrington's all scruffy! My, how Will Turner has matured! Long gone is the gangly boy of Pirates 1 who knew how to wield a sword but knew little of life. Elizabeth learns something new about herself by the end of the movie. And Jack... well, Jack is just Jack, but he's more in this movie.
This movie does what all middle movies in a trilogy should do -- it builds on the first movie, tells a complete story within the framework of this movie, yet sets up the next movie perfectly. Some people might not be satisfied with the end of POTC2 because it's not a clean end, but neither was The Two Towers and a lot of people say Two Towers is their favorite of the trilogy.
According to the Daily Variety headline blurbs I get, industry estimates say POTC2 could break box office records this weekend. If true, it deserves it. All IMHO of course. ;)
So yeah... I guess you could say I liked it. *g*

You know what else I thought? That whole swordplay bit at the old mill? That tasted of princess bride to me. I kept expecting for someone to yell out "Aaaaaaaaasssssssssss yoooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuu wishhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...."

Yup. My friend had NO clue there was a #3 POTC and I was hysterically laughing as she cursed out Disney & Johnny & Orlando and even the monkey. lol "But but it's only just started! NO...i'ts NOT been two hours!!!" Yea, the time flew for us too.
Fandoms collide? My friend kept telling me about Will's stunt "that is SO a Legolas move" or when during some fight scene there was a jump she said "THAT is FOTR". lol
I see the Star Wars connection too;VERY cool of them, intentional or not.
We both decided we need to see it again...and soon!!

Date: 2006-07-08 07:06 pm (UTC)Oh man... I would have been pissed at the ending if I didn't know there was another movie!
Ah, so it's not just me with the Star Wars thing. Yay! :D
I'm probably going to see it again tomorrow night. We've been invited to go with friends, and since hubby didn't get to see it yesterday, we'll probably go. Not that I'm complaining or anything because I'd be going again tomorrow anyway. ;)

Date: 2006-07-09 03:42 am (UTC)LOL She was!! I had to explain to her in LOTR terms "it's a triology that really wasn't until they found out how much money it could make!"
I saw it again tonight with the parents;Mom has a crush on Orlando and Dad usually doesn't like Johnny. BOTH came away liking the movie a lot....
Yay!

There's very rarely been a movie where I come out and want to go right back in and re-watch (LotR was the most recent, I think), but that fell into the category. :) Sure there were a few plot holes, but you were having so much rollicking fun that you just left those behind.
I was also surprised how little people stayed for the end of the credits. I thought there might have been more. But they'll learn.
*hugs*

Exactly! I'm sure I could pick the plot apart if I wanted to, but I was just having so much fun with the movie that I don't.
And yeah, not a whole lot of people stayed until the end of the credits in our theater either. :/ I usually stay to credits end anyway, mostly because I want to see the copyright information at the end. (yes, I'm a geek) I'm usually the last one to leave the theater, so it's kinda cool when other people stay behind along with me. :)
*hugs*
I'm glad you've having such a marvelous time on your trip!

Can you tell, I loved it too!!!!!!!!!!
